School Board Proceeds With New Addition To Blackford High School

Blackford High School main entrance interior renderOn Tuesday, August 21 the Blackford County School Board of Trustees voted to move forward with the construction of a new addition to the Blackford High School campus to ready the building for its conversion to a junior/senior high school in the 2019-2020 school year. As a reminder, we will reconfigure the school next fall, and we will house all students in grades 7-12 at the new Blackford Junior/Senior High School.

The new construction will add a gym space that will provide for increased academic programming, athletics, and other practices and performances, as well as a competition space for junior high athletic events. In addition, we will construct a new weight room facility and renovate existing locker rooms in order to house the junior high students in separate locker room facilities. The new facility will set directly south of the current main gym at Blackford High School.

As the new construction completes, we will renovate the current weight room into a classroom to house our JROTC program. JROTC will also utilize our current auxiliary gym for inside training and drill programs. This move will allow us to renovate the current JROTC space, which is housed in our career and technical education wing, to accommodate an expanded elective program for our junior high students.

The school board voted in May to spend $5,000,000 on the renovation/addition. The project is timed to minimize the financial impact on the local taxpayer. The school district paid off previous debt from the large construction project in 2000 this year, so the overall tax rate will not exceed the 2016 tax rate.

Blackford County Schools is excited about this project and the consolidation of the secondary buildings. This move will allow junior high students increased access to elective programming in the fine arts and career and technical education. The construction and renovations will begin in October of 2018, with an anticipated completion in the fall of 2019. Look for information in September from the high school administration as the construction will impact traffic flow and access to the south side of the buildings.

Included on the Blackford County Schools website are some artist renderings of the new construction. We are still determining final color choices, designs, and graphics, but these images will give viewers a concept of what the new facility will look like.
