Per Indiana Code 20-26-5-40.7 (effective July 1, 2024), school corporations shall adopt and implement a wireless communication device policy that prohibits a student from using a wireless communication device during instructional time, with the exception of the following provisions:
Wireless devices may be utilized when a teacher allows them to be used for educational purposes during instructional time
Wireless devices may be utilized in the event of an emergency or to manage a student’s healthcare
With the law in mind and with the intention of fostering safe and productive learning environments, students at BPS and BIS are not permitted to use cell phones or other electronic communication devices during instructional time, in or out of the classroom, unless granted permission to do so by a teacher or staff member. Additionally, students are not permitted to have cell phones or other electronic devices in their possession during the class time. Phones/electronic devices (other than BCS Chromebooks) must be stored in student lockers or backpacks and be turned off or be put in silent mode.
Students who use cell phones or other electronic communication devices to manage health related concerns (i.e. glucose monitoring for diabetes patients) must pre-arranged with the school nurse and school administration.
